Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed Wolves greats from the 1950s were his footballing inspiration. The Manchester United manager gave the Express & Star his own video tribute to honour three of the 1950s heroes inducted in the club's Hall of Fame this week.
Goalkeeper Bert Williams, centre-half and future Wolves captain Bill Slater and mercurial inside forward Peter Broadbent were the three of seven from the club's halcyon days honoured in the elite Hall with 1908 FA Cup winner Billy Harrison and 1970s greats Mike Bailey and John Richards.
Sir Alex revealed his love of the game was honed watching Wolves' famous floodlit matches that paved the way for the European Cup when Stan Cullis's legendary team took on and beat the cream of the continent.
Ferguson was a young boy growing up in Glasgow at the time and crowded around the only TV set in his street to watch those games.
In his tribute, Ferguson said: "I have very fond recollections of that great Wolves team of the 50s and the first floodlit games," said Ferguson. "I recall great players such as Bert Williams, Bill Slater, Peter Broadbent, Dennis Wilshaw, Eddie Clamp and Eddie Stuart.
"These games were fantastic - I remember when they played great teams such as Honved and Moscow Dynamo and it always seemed to be foggy from the pictures that were beamed back on our screens.
"Wolves used to wear these silk shirts which made them sparkle.
"I just want to say what great players they were - Bert was a great goalkeeper, Bill Slater was a fantastic defender and Peter was a great forward.
"I thank these players for giving us some great nights from years past."
