McDonald's long-term future in doubt

Walsall manager Chris Hutchings has thrown Clayton McDonald's long-term future into doubt after admitting he 'can't carry' five fit centre-backs.

The on-loan Manchester City defender has been a revelation in defence for the Saddlers, forming a rock solid partnership with Manny Smith.

But, while Hutchings insisted a decision doesn't hinge on the result of Stephen Roberts' back scan, he knows it will be difficult to keep McDonald if Roberts is fit, especially with Mark Hughes and Rhys Weston also available.

The manager said: "We couldn't carry five centre-halves, that's for sure. We have got another couple of weeks yet and are in dialogue with City all the time.

"I have always wanted to have four and we just have to wait and see. To have five centre-halves at this football club is a big ask."

The result of Roberts' scan is due in the next few days and Hutchings is enjoying his current defensive headache.

He said: "At the moment Clayton has got the shirt with Manny. Mark Hughes played in the reserves on Tuesday and he is captain, so it is good competition for places.

"Clayton has done very well and he has got to continue to do that."

Chief executive Roy Whalley and the club will review McDonald's loan when it expires on October 3, after the home game with Carlisle.
