The Walsall defender will have an operation next week, to try and cure a back problem which has plagued him for almost three months.

He hasn't played since suffering a knee injury against Saturday's visitors Huddersfield in December and will go under the knife to try to solve his ongoing back issues.

Boss Chris Hutchings has yet to see the 28-year-old play and is hesitant to set a date on his return.

The manager said: "We can't put a timescale on it but I would have thought at the end of July, August time.

"We don't know exactly, you'll be talking two to three months and when he's OK he's got to get that match fitness, which would be another two or three weeks.

"I don't know whether he'll be back for pre-season. In the first few weeks after the op, he will be doing nothing.

"Then, it's a case of steady progress to see what he can and can't do."

Roberts, who signed on a free transfer from Doncaster last summer, has only made 19 appearances for the Saddlers, scoring once, in a campaign beset by injuries.

Hutchings admitted the operation is the last option to try and end Roberts' problems.

He said: "An operation is always the last scenario for any player and any person.

"It's relieving one or two bits and pieces around the disc area. The options were six months rest or an operation."
