Tributes were paid in Wolverhampton city centre to around 500 Sikhs who lost their lives in a massacre more than 30 years ago.

Members of the Wolverhampton Sikh Partnership were invited to the Mayor's parlour for a day of commemorations for those who were killed during Operation Blue Star, a 1984 military operation designed to flush out Sikh separatists from a holy shrine in Punjab. Alongside MPs from Wolverhampton, the mayor and local councillors, members of the partnership paid verbal tributes to the dead before laying wreaths outside St Peter's Church.

Goldthorn resident Kuldip Singh organised the event and said: "I am happy, even though the purpose of today is to mark the anniversary of a tragic event.

"It was a pleasure to be invited into the Mayor's parlour and to know that our local MPs recognise this as an important occasion to mark means a lot.

"Justice for what happened is our ultimate aim and we still have a long way to go there."
