Wolverhampton vegetarian restaurant wins 'Curry Oscar' - here's why

“Beautiful place, beautiful food”

A Wolverhampton restaurant has been crowned Vegetarian restaurant of the year in a prestigious national competition.

Meat free planet, a vegan and vegetarian Indian restaurant in Wolverhampton, won the award on October 12, in the 2026 Asian restaurant and takeaway awards.

We visited the restaurant to meet the people behind the meat free establishment and find out about their mission to give back to the community.

Amarjit Kaur manager of meat free planet, known as Aman, started the business six years ago in London, alongside Mohammed Yameen. The restaurant moved to Wolverhampton from London around 15 months ago and has already made a name for itself.

Commenting on the award, Aman said: “The awards are called the Oscars of the curry industry and It feels amazing to win this prestigious award in our very first year. In our first year we got quite a few other awards as well but this one is important because it is an Oscar of the curry industry.

“In this community in Wolverhampton there’s not many places which are vegetarian and vegan that are doing well. I’ve heard that in the past five years this building has had six different owners.”

The restaurant also wishes to give back to the community and hosted a breast cancer awareness event on October 23, where all the proceeds went to charity.

He continued: “The story begins from day one when we moved to this community, and we were thinking we don’t have a family here so we started getting to know the people here instead.

“We got a lot of support from the community and we have a lot of customers who have faced cancer in their families or circle so after winning all these awards we wanted to say thank you to that community who has supported us.

“The best way is to support everyone regardless of race, colour or nationality and today we are supporting breast cancer. The proceeds are going to charity.”

The event also received outside support from other members of the community such as Paul Ryder from LGBT Sparkle.

“I think it’s good because it brings the community together but also raises awareness of breast cancer. It mainly effects women but can also affect men. It’s bringing the community together and creating more honest and open conversations,” said Paul.

Ravi Raj Kanabar, a major fan of the restaurant reviewed the food and staff, added: “It’s fantastic, the best place in Wolverhampton. I’m not from Wolverhampton I’m from elsewhere and looked it up on google but this must be my fifth or sixth visit so it’s absolutely lovely.

“Beautiful place, beautiful food, warm friendly staff - can’t complain.”
