Sun is out, but snow won't go

The sun may be starting to come out - but snowdrifts still remain higher than cars in some parts of the region.

This is the scene in Greenwood Road, Aldridge, where show remains piled 6ft high along the side of the road.

Dozens of schools closed due to snow and icy conditions on Monday last week and snow was piled more than 6ft high outside Barr Beacon School, in Old Hall Lane, Aldridge.

Staff fought to clear it but closed the school because the safety of the site could not be guaranteed.

Many schools across the borough were also closed the previous Friday following heavy snowfall, due to slippery conditions making access difficult. Willenhall North councillor Ian Shires has urged council officers to work with headteachers to reduce the number of school closures during heavy snow and blizzard conditions.

He has also suggested shopkeepers should be consulted to ensure businesses can remain open and continue trading efficiently in the snowy weather.

It came after an apology was issued from Walsall Council after overnight road gritting was not carried out and teams took to the roads later than other areas.

Scores of residents complained, but roads chief Tom Ansell said decisions had been made on expert data and forecasts.

Diggers were also sent out to Longwood Road and Old Hall Lane, in Aldridge, in a bid to get them reopened.

The unseasonable weather shows no sign of letting up with forecasters predicting the cold snap will last until mid-April.

No significant snowfall is forecast, but temperatures are expected to remain low, following on from the coldest March in more than 50 years.

This weekend in Walsall, temperatures are expected to stay between 8C (46.4F) and 1C (33.8F) on Saturday and between 9C (48.2F) and 2C (35.6F) on Sunday.
