Pupils from West Hill Junior School, Hednesford, were pictured carrying a canoe on their
heads in June 1986. They were on their way down to the River Trent during a camping course
to mark the end of term. The camp was held at Shugborough Park, near Stafford.

Deer straying on to Northway

It could be due to the weather or a change in farming practices in the area or it could be due to the nearby award winning local nature reserve, Alder Coppice. Whatever the reason, Muntjac deer which are often mistaken for large dogs, are now being seen regularly on Northway in Sedgley.

The small deer seem to travel up from Penn Common, pass through the nature reserve and then try to cross Northway to get to the grass banking beyond. Our gardens now possess many tasty morsels for wild animals and it seems they are being tempted out of the woodland reserve. The nature reserve also contains Roe Deer.

We should ask Dudley Council to erect deer warning signs at each end of Northway. An unusual road sign for the Black Country.
