Man taken to hospital after two lorries crash on M6 causing havoc for motorists - police appeal for witnesses
The southbound M6 near Wolverhampton and Walsall was closed after a crash involving two lorries which has left a man with potentially serious injuries.
The M6 was shut altogether between Junctions 11 (near Cheslyn Hay) and 10 (for Willenhall/Walsall) after two lorries crashed in the early hours of today (Monday).
National Highways West Midlands issued a statement at 12.47am to say that it was due to a collision involving two lorries and a subsequent oil spill.
Police say a man was taken to hospital with "potentially serious injuries".
The eastbound M6, which joins the M6 at Junction 10a, was also closed near the junction but later reopened.
One lane (of four) of the M6 was reopened at about 3.30am, and by 7am two of four lanes were open again. Motorists were warned of 60-minute delays.
At about 7.45am National Highways West Midlands said all lanes of the M6 had reopened.
A statement said: "All lanes have reopened on the M6 between Junction 10A (M54) and Junction 10 (Walsall) following a collision involving two HGVs. Thank you for your patience, please have a safe onward journey."
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “Upon arrival we found a man who was the driver of the first HGV. He was extricated from the vehicle by the fire service.
“Once extricated, he was assessed by ambulance staff and had sustained serious injuries. Ambulance staff delivered advanced trauma care to him at the scene.
“He was conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham for further treatment.
“No further patients required treatment.”
West Midlands Police had earlier issued a statement sayng: "We were called shortly before midnight to reports of a collision between two lorries.
"The driver of one of the lorries, a man, was taken to hospital with potentially serious injuries.
"The motorway was closed going south between Junction 11 and Junction 10.
"We are expecting delays which may affect people using the motorway network into this morning, so we are asking drivers to plan ahead and avoid the area where possible.
"Thank you for your patience.
"Anyone who saw what happened or has any dashcam footage should contact us on 101 quoting log 4433 of October 12."
