Sarah Coombes, the Labour MP for West Bromwich has led more than four agencies and 50 representatives in her ongoing fight against the use of illegal 'ghost plates'.

Also known as 'stealth plates', ghost plates are number plates that feature a reflective, transparent coating which prevents them from being identified by speed and roadside ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras.

The plates reached national recognition when MP Sarah Coombes raised the issue in Parliament on February 21, pushing for change under the Ten Minute Rule Bill, which allows backbench MPs to make their case for a new bill within the time frame.

Under the change, drivers using the illegal plates would face fines of up to £1,000 and six-point penalties, with Ms Coombes saying that the plates could be purchased for as little as £30, much lower than the current fine of £100.
