A set of historic and quirky rock dwellings in south Staffordshire will be opening up for free as part of a celebration of the country’s heritage.

Kinver Edge & the Rock Houses will be open for free on three days of the Heritage Open Days, England’s largest festival of history and culture.

The iconic spot is run by the National Trust, with a charge in place for members of the public to enter.

The dwellings on Compton Road were carved into the red sandstone of the Edge and were lived in by families up until the 1960s and the three open days on September 12, 18 and 20 will provide plenty of opportunities to hear about the stories of those who lived there.

A spokesman for the National Trust said: “Visit these quirky restored rock dwellings where families lived until the 1960s and were carved into the red sandstone with dramatic views across several counties.

“The famous Holy Austin Rock Houses are cosily restored to help you soak up the atmosphere of these unusual homes.

“Get comfortable by the fire and our volunteers will tell you tales of the people that lived right inside the rock.

“Enjoy a freshly baked cream tea or light bites in the delightful tearoom.”

The events will take place on Saturday, September 12 from 10.30am to 3.30pm, Friday, September 18 from 10.30am to 3.30pm, and Sunday, September 20 from 10.30am to 3.30pm.

The Houses and the Edge, which are a venue under the National Trust, will also be free to view through the three days, as opposed to normal fees to see them.
