Walsall Housing Group submitted the plans in 2024 for the old Walsall Tennis Club facility on Birmingham Road.

Fourteen objections were made against the application on the grounds of highway safety, additional traffic, emergency services access, noise and pollution.

The development marks phase two of a wider scheme to build houses in the area.

WHG previously secured permission to build 29 homes on the neighbouring former allotments land in October 2023.

Walsall Tennis Club was formed in 1912 but left its home of more than 100 years behind when WHG took over the site in 2018.

It has operated from the tennis courts at Queen Mary’s Grammar School since 2022.

WHG said the area at the rear of the Broadway Bar & Grill Hotel is ‘abandoned and overgrown with grass and weeds’.

Now phase two is approved, the housing association has permission to develop the land into four three-bedroom homes, five four-bedroom homes and five five-bedroom homes.

The plans state that 41 of the 43 homes for both phase one and two will be accessed via Cricket Close.

The remaining two properties, part of phase one, will have a private drive with access from Broadway.

The phase one application drew strong opposition in 2023 from residents who raised concerns about the cul-de-sac access.

But WHG took the application to the planning inspectorate on the grounds of non-determination, and the inspector ruled in the association’s favour.
