A West Bromwich pub could be given a new lease of life as houses after owners decided to sell up when business dropped.

The Spring Cottage, in Crookhay Lane, Hill Top, could be turned into six homes.

Included in the plan are 15 parking spaces and a private access road.

Plans have been submitted to planning bosses at Sandwell Council and are being considered.

A design and access statement, submitted on behalf of London-based developers Saxena, said: "The pub has lost a lot of trading over the last six years and like many pubs in the area cannot afford to trade with such a reduction in business.

"The concept is to demolish the existing pub and redevelop the site into six three-bedroom houses with private access to the rear for resident parking only.

"The new development will reflect the architectural features of surrounding dwellings but will also give the area a much-needed fresh look."

Developers had previously submitted an application to create a convenience store but changed the plans.

Wednesbury South ward Councillor Michael Middleton said he would support the revised proposals for homes.

Councillor Middleton added: "It's a significant improvement on the previous application.

"I would much rather have houses for the benefit of residents in the area than another retail unit selling alcohol."
