Date set for election of new Walsall council leader following sudden resignation
Councillors in Walsall will meet next week to vote in their new leader of the authority.
Former leader Councillor Garry Perry quit on May 21 claiming he’d experienced ‘political attrition, deliberate undermining, and bullying dressed up as politics’.
In a scathing statement announcing his resignation, the Conservative Group leader said integrity and transparency are ‘no longer shared values.’
In response to the resignation, leader of the Labour Group, Councillor Matt Ward, called on the national Conservative Party to stage an intervention.
Councillor Aftab Nawaz, leader of the Independent Group, said Walsall needs a bigger change than just a new leader.
The Conservatives with 37 elected members still hold the majority at Walsall Council.
A new leader of the Conservative Group will be chosen at a private meeting on June 5.
The newly appointed group leader will then be formally nominated as leader of Walsall Council, with all elected members voting at the full council meeting on June 10.
