Memorial plans are postponed

Plans to put up a memorial to the English Civil War battle of Hopton Heath have had to be postponed for this year.

The West Midlands branch of the Military Historical Society is trying to raise £10,000 to pay for a standing stone with a bronze plaque to be sited on land near to the former RAF base at Beaconside.

Stafford Borough Council has given planning permission after the RAF gave the OK for it to be sited on its land.

Project co-ordinator Dave Cooper said that funds were proving slower to raise than had first been hoped.

So far only about £1,000 has come in, along with a promise of £1,000 from Staffordshire County Council.

He said: "We have applied for a lot of grants towards the Hopton Heath Battlefield Memorial Fund without success. This project will happen eventually. It is just going to take a lot longer than we had hoped."

He added fundraising efforts would resume next spring.
