Machete-wielding robbers target cash delivery driver in Smethwick
The robbery took place at Windmills Shopping Park in Cape Hill
Police are hunting two masked men after a cash delivery driver was robbed by men with a machete in Smethwick this morning.
The robbery took place at Windmills Shopping Park in Cape Hill at around 7.45am.
Two men wearing balaclavas threatened the driver with a machete before fleeing with a quantity of cash.
The driver was not physically injured during the incident.
West Midlands Police has now launched an appeal for information on a “distinctive” white Ford Transit Custom van believed to have been used by the suspects.
The vehicle was missing both its front and rear number plates at the time of the robbery, although officers believe these may since have been replaced.
Detectives have been carrying out enquiries in the area, including recovering CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses.
Detective sergeant Tom Frenchum, from the force's major crime unit, said: "This was clearly a terrifying ordeal for the driver, but thankfully he was not physically injured during the robbery.
"We believe that the plates will have been put back on the vehicle now, but we need to hear from anyone who thinks they may have information about its whereabouts before or after the robbery.
"If anyone saw any suspicious activity in the area, or has information about who the vehicle is connected to, it’s really important that they get in touch with us as soon as possible."
Anyone with information about the robbery or the whereabouts of the van is urged to contact West Midlands Police on 101, quoting log 510 of November 2.
