Call for ban on adverts for short-haul flights and gas-guzzlers on Dudley Council property

Liberal Democrat wants a ban on short-haul flights and gas-guzzlers as part of a plan to preventing future wildfires in the borough

Advertising related to short-haul flights, fossil fuels and ‘high-polluting vehicles’ should be banned from Dudley Council property, says a councillor.

Councillor Ryan Priest, leader of Dudley’s Liberal Democrat group, called for the council to consider the ban as part of his proposals for preventing future wildfires in the borough.

His motion, which also includes a proposed ban on smoking and barbecues in public parks, will be considered at an extraordinary meeting of Dudley Council tonight (Monday).

The call was in response to the wildfires in Stourbridge in August this year, which destroyed 19 houses, and severely damaged several others.

Councillor Priest called on the authority’s cabinet member for regulation to look at prohibiting advertising for ‘high-carbon activities’ on council properties, which would include billboards on council-owned land, and could potentially apply to travel agents or garages if they leased their properties off the council.

Councillor Priest said such a ban would need to be subject legal and contractual commitments.
