M6 southbound reopens after van fire and 'significant' diesel spillage causes 60-minute delays
Motorists faced 60-minute delays on the approach after a van fire and diesel spillage
The M6 in the West Midlands has partially reopened after a van fire and diesel spillage caused hour-long delays.
A spokesperson for National Highways said: “The M6 in the West Midlands is closed southbound between J6 (Gravelly Hill Interchange) and J5 (near Castle Bromwich) following a van fire and a significant diesel spillage, with closures implemented at 4pm to allow emergency services and contractors to treat the road surface and recover the vehicle.”
Motorists were warned of delays of 60 minutes on the approach and advised to follow the diversion route laid out by road signs in the area.
In an update just after 5pm National Highways West Midlands said: “The road remains closed. Traffic caught within the closure is being released in lane 4.”
Then at around 6.30pm the organisation said two of four lanes were open again, with delays of 30 minutes between Junctions 6 and 7.
