Richard Wellington, general manager of the pub in Pennwood Lane said the water supply was expected to be restored today (Monday).

"It's cost us a lot of money, we would normally be packed during the period between Christmas and new year, " he said.

"As far as I'm told, a water pipe burst on the 18th hole of Penn Golf course, under the ground, and they had to dig it up yesterday morning."

For hygiene and heating reasons the pub was unable to open.

A statement issued by the pub said: "It’s frustrating, and oddly specific, but it’s completely out of our hands. Normal service will resume just as soon as the ground stops misbehaving."

Mr Wellington said it was unlikely the pub would get any recompense for the lost trade.

The Barley Mow, which dates back to 1630, was taken over by Marc and Danielle Everitt in May this year.
