Councillor Simon Bennett welcomed the council's announcement that it would be giving traders a 25 per cent discount during the delayed £9 million redevelopment scheme.

Last month the council revealed that the revamped market would not be reopening until June 2026, eight months later than scheduled, after problems were discovered with the ground conditions.

It means the market will still be a building site at the end of its bicentenary year.

Councillor Bennett said the rent cut, which will be in place until June 30 next year, would provide much-needed relief to traders operating amid the disruption caused by the significant construction works.

He said the Conservative group had consistently raised the concerns of local traders and pushed for financial support during the redevelopment.
