Wolverhampton Girls' High School, on Tettenhall Road, Wolverhampton, has announced  it will reopen as normal tomorrow (March 10) following the discovery of an 'unknown substance' in the school hall.

In a letter sent to parents earlier today, the school announced that pupils were sent home after the discovery was made, saying there was a 'possibility' that the substance included asbestos.

The school said 'specialist advice' was sought following the discovery, with the hall being sealed off as a precaution.

In the letter, Mrs T Young, headteacher at the all-girls' school, said: "Earlier today, an unknown substance was found in the school hall.

"You will be aware that many buildings constructed before 1999 have the potential to contain asbestos, and therefore, there was a possibility that the substance included asbestos.

"Specialist advice was immediately sought, and the hall was sealed off. As the health and safety of our community is always our top priority, a precautionary decision was also taken to close the school."

Following an investigation, it was determined that no asbestos material was found in the substance, with Mrs Young adding that the school will reopen as normal tomorrow.

She said: "Specialist companies attended the school this morning and took samples for testing.

"I am pleased to confirm that the results were negative, meaning there was no asbestos in the material found.

"I hope you will agree that these precautionary actions were the right steps to take to ensure everyone's safety.

"Thanks again for your understanding, and I can confirm that the school will be open as usual tomorrow."

The school has confirmed it will open at normal times tomorrow.

The spokesperson added: "The school will reopen as normal tomorrow, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank parents, carers, and the community for their understanding and support.”
