Former Goodyear workers help day centre
The generosity and hard work of a group of former Goodyear workers has helped transform a Wolverhampton day centre.
Members of the Goodyear former workers association spent time working on improvements at the St Columbas Day Centre in Finchfield.
They worked to replace the floor of the dining area at the day centre, which helps cater for people with physical disabilities, people who have mental health problems and mild to moderate Dementia.
Following the completion of the work, members of the group organised a ceremony at the centre where they re-opened the room to the users and staff.
Malcolm Bethall, a former Goodyear worker with 39 years of service, did the presentation of the room and officially declared it open for us.
Cyril Barrett, chairman and trustee of the fund, spoke about what it meant to the group to complete this work on the centre.
He said: "It's a small charity which is doing vital work in the community and whenever you walk in, everyone has smiles on their faces.
"I don't think enough people know about this place, which is a shame as it's a beautiful place to take your family members to."
The benevolent fund has helped fund more than 100 projects for charities and organisations around the city.
This includes helping the Good Shepherd, Beacon Centre for the blind, Wolverhampton MS and the Haven.
Cyril said helping St Columbas followed the work the group did and honoured the legacy of workers at Goodyear.
He said: "Helping St Columbas fits what we want to do by creating a proud living legacy for the people using the centre and all workers."
