Phillip Riggon, aged 69, won the cash on top BBC show The Wheel, hosted by Michael McIntyre, in an episode aired on Saturday night (November 29).

The former science teacher at Walsall Academy in Bloxwich answered the final cash out question correctly with the help of celebrity panellist Fatiha El-Ghorr to scoop the money

Earlier in the show he joked with Michael McIntyre and other celebrity panellists including Richard Madeley and Rachel Riley that if he won enough money it would help his wife Janet - who was watching on downstairs - to retire as well.

Phillip had just 30 seconds to ponder a multiple choice question on television drama and took the advice of comedian and writer Fatiha who he chose to help him and who successfully came up with the correct answer which he went with.

He said afterwards he wanted to take his grandchildren to Jamaica to experience the place where he grew up and that he would use the cash to take Janet on holiday.

He said after the win: "My wife has been working with special needs children and before I retired I was a teacher in a secondary school so we haven't always had much time together so at least some of the money,  I think will go on us doing that and going on holiday."

Would you have got the winning question right? It was: Which of these American TV dramas was first to air? The West Wing; ER; Sex in the City or the Sopranos?
