Lucy's Pantry is a community shop in Walsall where members can buy discounted food no longer wanted by supermarkets, with each item being given a points value rather than a specific monetary asking price.

Membership for the shop costs £5 a year, and allows customers to access the bargain prices as well as a range of 'normal' items also for sale at thir full price at the site in the Saddlers Centre.

The points system works in a way that 50p is equal to one 'Lucy's Pantry point,' with the minimum spend in the shop set at 10 points.

Boxes of cereal including 'Cornflakes' and 'Fruit 'n' Fibre' cost one point, while other items including bread, fresh fruit and veg, tinned goods, confectionery and much more can also be picked up for a bargain price.

And after the launch of the shop, plans are already in place to turn Lucy's Pantry into a community hub for the people of Walsall.

"As we're a community shop we're going to start groups up that will be open to the public," store manager Joan Pittaway explained. "One of those groups will be a cooking class where we will cook a meal, and then build up a recipe bag with all the ingredients in it to make the meal of the day.

"They will be able to be purchased from our shop for ten points, which equals £5.

"We're also hoping to start up some crafts clubs and some children's clubs. Everyone is welcome, so please come along."
