MP hands in petition over cuts at Walsall Arboretum
An MP has presented a petition to Parliament opposing the loss of staff at the Walsall Arboretum.
Two posts are set to go at the popular attraction – Arboretum manager and events co-ordinator – under a council staff restructure.
Walsall South MP Valerie Vaz has this week presented a petition signed by around 1,400 people calling for the move to be scrapped.
The Labour MP said: "I am concerned that the council have not consulted my constituents about these changes and any loss of these posts may be in breach of the terms and conditions of the Heritage Lottery funding.
“The Arboretum is a well-used asset in the town centre. The onsite team and the activities have ensured a positive experience there.
“I know my constituents visit the Arboretum which improves their wellbeing and enables them to stay fit. The onsite management team will ensure that children and adults are safe while they enjoy the Arboretum.”
Campaigners fear the loss of the posts could lead to a deterioration in the care and maintenance of the site.
