A5 crash: Road remains closed in both directions after lorry hits pedestrian near Brownhills

Part of the A5 in Staffordshire remains closed to traffic after a lorry hit a pedestrian this morning (Wednesday).

Police, air ambulance and the  fire service were all been called to reports of a serious collision on the A5 Watling Street between the Rising Sun Island (for the A452/Brownhills West) and the Turf Island (for the B4154/Norton Canes).

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said the crash on Wednesday morning (December 31) involved a lorry and a pedestrian.

"We were called to reports of a collision between a HGV and a pedestrian on Watling Street at 10.55am. Two ambulances, two paramedic officers and an aircraft from Midlands Air Ambulance Charity was sent to the scene.

"On arrival we discovered one patient."

National Highways West Midlands said: "The A5 in Staffordshire remains closed in both directions between the A452 (Rising Sun Island) and the B4154 The Turf Island (near Brownhills West).

Diversion information

Traffic heading northbound is advised to follow the Solid Circle diversion symbol on road signs.

  • At the Rising Sun roundabout take the 3rd exit onto the A5 eastbound

  • Continue to the traffic light controlled junction with the A5195 at Brownhills and take the first exit onto the A5195 northbound

  • Remain on the A5195 for approximately two miles to the roundabout with the A5190 at Burntwood

  • Take the second exit to join the A5190 and continue for approximately two miles again to reach the five ways roundabout at Heath Hayes

  • Take the first onto the B4154 and continue to reach The Turf roundabout and re-join the A5.

Traffic heading southbound is advised to follow the Hollow Circle diversion symbol on road signs.

  • At The Turf roundabout take the first exit onto the B4154 northbound (Walsall Road)

  • Continue to the next roundabout with the A5190 at Heath Hayes and take the fourth exit onto the A5190

  • Continue on the A5190 for approximately three miles to the roundabout with the A5195 at Burntwood

  • Take the second exit onto the A5195 and continue for approximately two miles to reach the traffic light controlled junction with the A5 at Brownhills and continue your journey.
