Five crews were called to the fire, with the fire being put out quickly

Five fire engines and a response vehicle attended the scene, with crews from West Bromwich, Tipton, Smethwick, Oldbury and Highgate.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Fire Service said: "The fire, believed to have started accidentally, caused severe damage to the room of origin, and caused heavy smoke logging in the flat. It was extinguished by crews, causing no fire spread to neighbouring units or flats.

"Five people freed themselves from the flat before we arrived at the scene.

"Electrics to the flat were isolated, and the final crew left this incident at 1.50am."
