Plans to refurbish landmark Greggs opposite West Bromwich Albion's ground - here's how it will look
A landmark Greggs branch that is a favourite with football fans is in line for a major refurbishment.
The bakery chain has submitted plans for a revamp of the branch at the former Hawthorns pub on the corner of Birmingham Road and Halfords Lane, opposite West Bromwich Albion's football stadium, also called the Hawthorns.
The Grade II-listed building dates back to circa 1840, when it was the home of well-known iron merchant Henry Halford.

In 1903 it became the Hawthorns Hotel, offering accommodation to visiting footballers, and later became a favourite pub with fans on matchdays, and home to the Throstles Club.
In 2015 it was taken over by Greggs, but in February this year it was dealt a blow when it was given a two-star 'requires improvement' hygiene rating.
Jackie Ford, writing on behalf of the company, said most of the work would involve the refitting of the interior, although new signs were planned for the feature porch.

She said the fireplace and ceiling cornices would be retained.
"The interior re-fitting works will be replacing modern additions and are necessary due to the wear and tear since the last refit about 10 years ago," she added.
"It is not considered that any of the changes are contentious or will impact upon the historic core of the building.
"The proposed advertisement and internal works are entirely sympathetic to the grade II listed building."
A new outdoor seating area is also proposed.
The plans will now be considered by Sandwell Council planners.
