Sainsbury's announces £17m new store bringing 100 jobs to Sutton Coldfield
Sainsbury's has been been given the green light to develop a £17m new store bringing 100 jobs to Sutton Coldfield.
The chain wants to re-develop the former Homebase site at the corner of Jockey Road and Chester Road in New Oscott near Sutton Coldfield providing around 100 full- and part-time jobs.
Under the scheme the existing building will be revamped to include an Argos concession, Click & Collect for groceries, clothing and Habitat ranges. There will be improved customer access, including a new pedestrian route linking to nearby bus stops.
The company said the proposals followed extensive community engagement, including an online consultation hub and targeted social media promotion which resulted in hundreds of residents providing strong support for the plans to revitalise the brownfield site.

Sainsbury’s supermarket property development boss Christian Wakelin said: “We’re thrilled that Birmingham City Council has approved our plans for Sutton Coldfield. This new supermarket will bring significant investment to the area, create new jobs, and offer a fantastic shopping experience for customers.
"We’re proud to be regenerating this site and look forward to becoming part of the community.”
Sutton Vesey ward representative Councillor Rob Pocock said: “I would like to thank Sainsbury’s for responding with such care and concern to the comments raised by residents during the application process. This bodes well for a popular, environmentally positive and successful new facility within our local community! I look forward to continue working closely with the Sainsbury’s team as this project progresses."
The plans were approved by Birmingham City Council’s planning committee. The site is directly opposite both a Tesco Extra shop at the Princess Alice Retail Park.
