In pictures: Fire station staff host festive lunch to ease loneliness in Birmingham community
Firefighters and staff at a Birmingham fire station played host to around 60 residents when they threw open the door for a Christmas luncheon.
It was organised by Candy Woods of West Midlands Fire Service’s recruitment team, with the food prepared by members of Ladywood Seventh Day Adventist Church.
The event brought together some 60 guests for an afternoon of festive cheer, providing an opportunity for those who may be spending the festive period alone to enjoy a home-cooked meal and entertainment.

Lending a helping hand were the Ladywood Pathfinders Youth Ministry and the on-duty firefighters who helped to serve meals. As well as a hearty three-course meal there was live music, entertainment and a choir performance.
The afternoon was rounded off with gift-giving, with presents donated by service staff and the church members.

Candy said: “The idea was to give people aged over 60 the opportunity to come together for a Christmas gathering. For one reason or another, some may be lonely or without family or loved ones at this time of year.
“I’m sure everyone who came enjoyed the company and had a really nice time. That’s what West Midlands Fire Service is all about.”

Ladywood Fire Station Watch Commander Alex Nicholls added: “It’s incredibly important to host events like these, particularly at this time of year. It was a pleasure to welcome everyone to their community fire station on a Sunday afternoon.

“We’ve got a great team at Ladywood, who mucked in and helped throughout the day. It’s why we’re here – giving back to the community we serve.”
