The lorry driver escaped from the 44-ton truck prior to emergency services arriving.

He was being treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Rail operators West Midlands Railway said replacement buses had been running between the Lichfield City, Trent Valley and Sutton Coldfield stations.

The line did reopen around 2.30pm but disruption remained.

In a message to passengers, officials said: "As stated earlier the line has reopened and full service recovery has begun however amendments and cancellations are still likely as the vehicle is removed from the road."

Fire crews from Perry Barr and Erdington stations were at the scene at around 12pm.

Firefighters tweeted: "A HGV has come to rest on its side after striking the bridge.

"Please be mindful and avoid the area if possible. Road likely to be blocked for some time."

Summer Road was closed after the crash.
