A new Lidl store has finally opened, marking the first day of shopping for hundreds of bargain-hungry Walsall residents.

The new superstore, on Walsall Road, Walsall Wood, was developed on the land formerly owned by the Horse and Jockey and marks the first Lidl store to open in the Walsall Wood area.

The ribbon-cutting event, held on January 30, was attended by the Lord Mayor of Walsall, Anthony Harris, as well as dozens of shoppers in the area, all eager to get an early bargain.

Students from the local Castlefort JMI school also helped to cut the ribbon on the doors, with the school receiving four weeks' worth of fresh fruit from the discount retailer.

Talking about the store, Joe Caunt, regional head of property at Lidl GB, said: "This project has been a real team effort, and we’ve worked hard to bring our best-value offering to the community."

The newly built venue quickly garnered widespread anticipation as the building was erected over the 2024 period, with many people sharing their excitement at finally getting a Lidl bakery section in their area.

Sarah Morrison, 45, who visited the store on its first day of operating, said: "It's great, we have really only had Aldi, Tesco and B&M around here for a long time.

"The bakery section is what I think most people want. It's almost legendary at this point."

Lidl said the new site spans 1,516 square metres, with around 40 jobs being brought to the area.

The new store will be open from 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm Sunday.
