Find out which Black Country borough is 'the unhealthiest place in the UK'

Towns and cities in the Black Country are among the unhealthiest in the country, according to new figures.

According to the figures, Dudley is the unhealthiest place in the UK followed by Walsall in second and Wolverhampton in sixth.

But Dudley Council bosses have hit back, saying the figures are 'nonsense' and have 'no real credibility'.

Walsall Council has gone as far as reporting Sports Betting Online, which compiled the figures, to the national health watchdog.

The figures show the number of gyms, McDonalds, swimming pools, sports clubs, sporting events, public parks and cycle routes – all per 100,000 people.

Dudley was found to have the worst gym to population ratio with just three per 100,000. Walsall topped the statistics for the ratio of McDonalds to people, with 14 per 100,000.

Wolverhampton did not top any of the categories but was among the worst places in the county for public parks with just three per 100,000 people.

The worst was Stoke with two per 100,000.

Councils have rubbished the statistics and hit out at the 'unhelpful' survey, which they say has been compiled with 'little knowledge' of the region.

Cllr Julie Fitzpatrick, portfolio holder for Community, Leisure and Culture said: "This website has no proper data, clear methodology and therefore has no real credibility.

"It is a classic example of fake news and it certainly came as news to us that Walsall has '14 McDonald outlets per 100,000 of the population' in the borough and only three gyms.

"Anyone who lives here knows this is a nonsense and we immediately challenged its content."

Dudley has at least 20 gyms, including eight outdoor, with a population of around 300,000.

This means its ratio of gym to people should be around six to 100,000, not the three to 100,000 suggested by the figures.

While also including Stourbridge and Coseley, Dudley has six McDonalds. This means the ratio would be around three to 100,000, not the 10 to 100,000 suggested by the figures.

Councillor Rachel Harris, the cabinet member for health and wellbeing at Dudley, claims the town has 81 fast food outlets per 100,000.

She said: "Surveys such as this are unhelpful and confusing for people as they are often based on little knowledge of an area or the hard work that goes on.

"In Dudley we have a very active programme of work to promote healthy lifestyles and tackle obesity.

"We are working very hard to encourage people of all ages to lead fit and healthy lifestyles."
