Walsall's £32m super tip dubbed ‘biggest in Europe’ to open in late January
Walsall’s new £32million super tip is set to open ‘sometime in late January’, according to the portfolio holder for street scene.
Officially titled the Household Waste Recycling Centre and Waste Transfer Station, the facility at Middlemore Lane, Aldridge, was completed in August and was supposed to open in late 2025.
The delay in opening was raised at Walsall Council’s cabinet meeting on December 10.
Leader of the authority, Councillor Mike Bird, asked the cabinet member for street scene, Councillor Suky Samra, for an update.
Councillor Bird said ‘those who don’t understand the system’ are making ‘political statements against the council’ on the delay.
Councillor Samra said: “We built it super fast. The permits are almost there and we’re hoping to open sometime late in January.

“You can’t apply for the permits until you get through certain phases of the build.
“This site will be future proof, it is a fantastic facility and I think we will be the talk of town when it comes to recycling, not just across the West Midlands but the UK.
“The site offers what other sites have never previously offered and we will be opening it very soon.”
Councillor Bird said: “You can’t apply for a permit until the building is completed, and as a result, there are those who don’t understand the system who are trying to make political statements against this council.
“As you say, it is a fantastic facility and I think it’s the biggest in Europe.
“It will be the envy of other councils and as I always say, where Walsall leads, others follow.”
The new Household Waste Recycling Centre and Waste Transfer Station is located on the former McKennie Brass site, and will replace the existing tip at Merchants Way.
Once the super tip is open, Walsall Council will close the Fryers Road tip in Bloxwich for redevelopment.
The Merchants Way tip will eventually close once the Fryers Road site redevelopment is complete.
