Firefighters were called out to Devon Road in Cannock at around 2pm yesterday after the householder had fallen asleep while cooking chips.
The resident woke to the smell of smoke after the pan had caught alight. They shut the kitchen door, left the house and called 999.
The house had two smoke alarms, but the batteries had been taken out of both, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said.
A total of 10 firefighters were called out to the scene, which they left shortly after 3pm.
An ambulance was called out as a precautionary measure but the resident did not require hospital treatment.
