Firefighters were called to Vicarage Walk, Hixon, at around 10.30am yesterday. The blaze was confined to the roof space of the detached property and was believed to have been caused accidentally.

Roy Daniels, watch manager at Stafford fire station, said a resident of the property had been using a garden incinerator to dispose of waste but fire spread to the roof of the house. He said firefighters managed to get the blaze under control within 45 minutes.

He added: "It caused severe damage to the roof and loft space. We were called by the occupier. The aerial appliance from Stafford was utilised to strip back tiles from the roof and gain access to extinguish the fire."
