Number 18 Lichfield Street now has permission to become a facility for 40 pupils aged 11-16.

Applicant Apex Independent Academy submitted the proposals to Walsall Council to convert the two-storey office building.

The grand property, previously home to the Pathway Centre, dates back as early as 1883.

It is located within the Lichfield Street Conservation Area and surrounded by a number of Grade II Listed buildings and locally listed buildings.

In 2024 permission was granted to convert it into nine one-bedroom apartments by a different applicant, but the work was never carried out.

The latest plans involve classrooms for year seven to year eleven students, sensory and quiet rooms, a common room, IT suite and accessible toilets.

The outdoor space will include a secure children’s play area, football pitch, 12 on-site car parking spaces and dedicated drop-off area.

The application received no objections from statutory consultees, and one objection from a member of the public on the grounds of highway safety and noise and disturbance.

Agent Anjum Design Ltd said: “The proposal provides much-needed SEN school places in Walsall, ensures a safe and inclusive environment, and protects residential amenity.”
