Staff at Maple Tree Nursery in Delves in Walsall set about organising a series of activities after becoming aware that the nearest kit was situated 10 minutes away from the West Bromwich Road site.

Their efforts have so far raised more than £460 with the help of 33 donors via an online appeal  to purchase the equipment which costs £1,500.

Nursery manager Cheryl Hadley explains: "As a setting, we want this device in our nursery just in case we are ever required to need one for our children, parents, grandparents, staff or any visitors who attend our setting.

"It could literally be the thing that saves a person's life."

"We are currently trying to raise enough money to purchase a defibrillator for our nursery. Sadly our nearest is 10 minutes away, the schools are being given them through government funding, but nursery settings don't have the option to do this," she added.

The nearest equipment is located at Acorn's Children's Hospice in Walstead Road.

To boost the  tally the nursery will be holding a Christmas clothing week from December 15 when the staff, children and families will be wearing festive themed jumpers and pyjamas, and making donations for its Power a Heartbeat defibrillator project.
