Authentic buildings and industrial relics from the region's past have won international acclaim as the Black Country Living Museum was today named as one of the most culturally significant collections in the UK.

The popular tourist attraction, in Tipton Road, Dudley, has today been recognised by Arts Council England with its prestigious 'Designation' accolade, after judges were wowed by the rich history behind the exhibits.

Museum chairman John Hughes said the lengthy application process had been tough, but worthwhile.

"I am absolutely thrilled that we have gained this internationally recognised accolade," he said.

"The award is a fitting tribute to the museum, the Black Country and the many hundreds of people who have campaigned, developed and supported us over the last 40 years."

Councils across the region today paid tribute to the museum's importance in attracting visitors from across the country and abroad.

Sandwell chief executive Jan Britton said: "There's a little bit of Sandwell spirit in Dudley in the Black Country Living Museum – we recognise the museum as part of our cultural heritage and a great asset for attracting visitors

"The former Rolfe Street Baths in Smethwick is now next to the entrance to the Black Country Living Museum which is a great advert for the history of the Sandwell area."

The museum was opened in 1967 and houses buildings moved from their original position and rebuilt, including the £10 million 1930s High Street known as the Oldbury Buildings that originally stood in Birmingham Street, and the Bottle and Glass Inn.

Designation, awarded to just 138 collections, identifies the exhibits as iconic, authentic, of the finest quality and set in "aspirational and creative" organisations.
