Donations pour in for family of Wolverhampton dad killed in Lidl crash

James Singh Jagpal, 39, died at the scene

Thousands of pounds have been raised to support the family of a devoted father-of-two who died after a car crashed into a Lidl supermarket in Wolverhampton.

James Singh Jagpal, 39, died at the scene of the collision at the store off Finchfield Road shortly before 6pm on Friday (October 23).

A GoFundMe page set up by Sophie Jagpal has raised more than £2,600 towards a £25,000 target in under 24 hours, with donations intended to help the family cope with the financial impact of his death.

Mr Jagpal was described by his family as a loving father to two daughters, a devoted partner of more than 20 years and a much-loved son and brother.

In a message accompanying the fundraiser, Sophie wrote: "It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the devastating news of the sudden and tragic loss of a much-loved dad James Jagpal, who was taken far too soon in an accident on 23rd October 2026 at Lidl in Wolverhampton.

"No family should ever have to experience such heartbreaking loss, and no words can truly express the pain and emptiness left behind.

"In a moment, this family's world has been turned upside down as they try to come to terms with a loss they could never have prepared for."

The appeal aims to cover funeral costs, essential household expenses and unforeseen costs following the tragedy.

Sophie added: "Our hope is to give the family some breathing space, allowing them to grieve, support one another and begin to navigate the days ahead without the added worry of financial pressures.

"We want to bring our family, friends and wider community together to show them that they are not alone and that they have people around them who care deeply and want to help in any way they can."

She concluded: "Gone far too soon, loved forever and never forgotten. Rest in peace James."

In an earlier tribute, Mr Jagpal's family said he was known for his kindness, generosity and wonderful sense of humour.

They said: "James was the absolute centre of our world, and it is unimaginable how we will navigate life without him by our side.

"We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the staff, customers and emergency services who immediately came to James's aid at the scene."

A dark blue Renault Zoe crashed into the supermarket on Friday evening. It is understood the driver, a woman in her 70s, suffered a medical incident at the wheel.

West Midlands Police confirmed the driver has since been discharged from hospital and will be spoken to by officers “in due course”.

Two other women who were taken to hospital following the crash have also been discharged.

Officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and have appealed for witnesses and dashcam footage.

A force spokesperson said: "We're looking to speak to anyone who was driving in the area around Finchfield Hill between 5pm and 6pm on Friday.

"We want to understand what might have caused the collision and would especially like to see any dashcam footage which might show the car involved.

"If you remember seeing a blue Renault Zoe immediately before the collision, please get in touch."
