A West Midlands Police spokesperson said the attack was preceded by a crash involving two cars. A group of men subsequently attacked the victim including with a hammer.

A shopkeeper in the area, who did not want to be named, told the Express & Star he phoned the emergency services after a man with a head injury came into his shop asking for help.

"A man came in with a head wound which was bleeding and said he needed help. It looked like he had been hit by something and wasn't in a good way so I called the police and the ambulance.

"It is rare to see this around here in my experience, certainly on a Sunday afternoon. I just hope he is OK."

Police said the victim was treated at the scene then taken to hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The police spokesperson added: "We’re investigating and anyone with any information should ring us on 101 or Live Chat quoting log number 2411 of March 15."
