Man who stole from shops in Wolverhampton and threatened staff has sentence delayed again

A "one-man Wolverhampton crime wave" who threatened shop staff with knives and machetes has once more had his sentence adjourned.

Steven Baker, of no fixed abode, shoplifted from shops in Tettenhall, Wolverhampton city centre and Wednesfield between June and July last year.

On August 6 last year Baker, 46, admitted two counts of robbery, one count of attempted robbery, two counts of possession of a knife or blade and two counts of theft from a shop.

A court previously heard he used a machete to threaten staff as he demanded money.

He was originally due to be sentenced in September but that was postponed. A second hearing at Wolverhampton Crown Court yesterday (Tuesday, January 27) was also ineffective.

Baker appeared via video link from HMP Birmingham for the latest hearing but after a delayed meeting with counsel, Recorder Abi Joyce said the time allowed for the sentencing was not enough.

She said: "We have 30 minutes for this case now but think we need an hour at least because it is quite complicated. I apologise to the defendant because I understand his frustration but I don't think we can deal with it sufficiently in the time we have today."

Baker was remanded in custody and will now be sentenced at Wolverhampton on March 30.
