Baby was not breathing when emergency crew arrived at West Bromwich home, court hears

The trial of a woman accused of killing her baby daughter at a West Bromwich maisonette has heard the two-month-old was not breathing when the ambulance crew arrived.

Zara Arsalan, aged 31, also known as Sharandeep Talwandi, is standing trial at Coventry Crown Court accused of murdering baby Harleen Bains causing her multiple skull fractures and bleeding on the brain on July 23, 2020.

Giving prosecution evidence on Wednesday paediatric neurosurgeon Jay Jayamohan said West Midlands Ambulance Service paramedics reported that Harleen was not breathing when they got to the property in  in Caddick Crescent, West Bromwich.

He told the court that when hands were put round her chest she gasped and began "erratic breathing" before going into cardiac arrest. She was given chest compressions and then taken to nearby Sandwell General Hospital.
