"We have been here for five minutes, and already we've had lots of cars come in with completely illegal number plates," said West Bromwich MP Sarah Coombes, as she joined officers for an operation at the junction of The Expressway and All Saints Way.

With its wide dual carriageways and industrial estates, the town has become a magnet for unauthorised car meetings, often involving on-street racing, in recent years.

To combat this, speed cameras have been installed, but Miss Coombes says an increasing number of drivers have responded by fitting so-called 'ghost' number plates which the cameras cannot read.

She has raised the matter in parliament, calling for fines of up to £1,000 and six-point penalties for drivers who use them to evade the law.
