Murder trial is told of partner's 46 injuries
A woman who was killed by her partner when she allegedly tried to leave him for a love rival had suffered 46 injuries when she was found dead, a court was told.
Paramjit Kaur's body was found with a range of bruises and scratches around her head, neck and arms when she was found in a storeroom at a house in West Bromwich.
Giving evidence at the murder trial of her partner Gurinder Singh yesterday, Dr Alexander Kolar, who carried out the post mortem, told the jury her injuries were consistent with someone who had been strangled.
"There was evidence of a traumatic injury to the neck," he said.
Dr Kolar said he had identified 46 injuries in total but admitted that the injuries below the neck may have occurred when her body was moved.
He also said some of the minor bruises could have occurred as a result of everyday knocks.
Meanwhile, the jury also heard evidence via videolink from Paramjit's father Sadhu Ram, who said he knew the alleged love rival, Budh Ram, from his childhood.
Mr Balbir Singh, defending, reminded him of a statement he gave to police last year in which he said he never knew Budh Ram.
"In that statement you said you did not know anyone of that name, why was that?" he said.
"When he was in India he had a different name," said Paramjit's father, speaking through a translator.
"What was his name in India?" said Mr Singh.
"His name was Surjit," he said.
"In your interview you said you didn't know anyone by the name of Surjit either," said Mr Singh.
"No, I knew him," he replied.
The prosecution alleges that Gurinder Singh, aged 42, strangled Paramjit Kaur, 34, on July 2, 2011 in Walter Street, West Bromwich, because she wanted to leave him.
He then handed himself in at West Bromwich police station," Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.
Pc Parker, who was on duty that night, also gave evidence. He said: "I introduced myself and said 'Why are you at the station?'
"He replied 'My girlfriend is dead – she is at 47 Walter Road'."
Singh was then cautioned.
Pc Parker said that during the time Singh was with him, he was completely calm and did not argue or show any resistance.
He said he was compliant with everything he was asked to do.
Gurinder Singh admits killing Paramjit but denies murder.
The trial continues.
