Former international and title-winning boss: Who could be set to follow Eric Ramsay into West Brom backroom team

Albion are set to appoint Minnesota United's Eric Ramsay as their new head coach.

The 34-year-old, a former Chelsea and Manchester United coach, is expected to be confirmed as Albion boss following two successful years in the MLS with an unfancied Minnesota outfit.

It is understood a deal is in its advanced stages for the Shrewsbury-born coach to succeed Ryan Mason at The Hawthorns after the latter was dismissed on Tuesday following 10 successive away defeats.

Albion are in action at Ramsay's first professional club Swansea City in the FA Cup third round on Sunday. It is not confirmed but unlikely the new boss will be at the helm in south Wales. He did not jet out to prepare for Minnesota pre-season training, which is set to begin on Monday.

Who could Ramsay bring in as his Baggies backroom team?

First-team coach James Morrison is Albion's interim boss and he remains supported by statistical analyst Damia Abella and goalkeeping coach Boaz Myhill.

But it is expected the incoming boss will bring some of his existing and potentially some new staff members with him to The Hawthorns.

One of Ramsay's right-hand men with 'The Loons' is former Swansea and Wrexham central defender Dennis Lawrence.

Lawrence, 51, a former Trinidad & Tobago international, is believed to be heading over to join Ramsay's staff.

It is understood the 6ft 7ins former stopper flew back out to Minnesota while Albion were working on Ramsay negotiations, but if all goes to plan he could return in the coming days.

Lawrence was assistant to Mark Robins at Coventry City between 2021 and 2024 so is well-versed in the Championship. He departed the CBS Arena shortly before Robins' sacking. He then immediately moved Stateside.

Another of Ramsay's assistant coaches, New Zealand-born Cameron Knowles, is reported to be a top candidate to replace the outgoing head coach in lead role.

What are we hearing on anybody else?

Another name on the radar to potentially join on Ramsay's coaching staff, as we revealed on Thursday, is 1990s stalwart and Manchester City captain and promotion-winning hero Andy Morrison.

Former defender Morrison, 55, is currently out of work but spent six years managing in the Welsh top flight for Connah's Quay Nomads, where he won successive domestic Cymru Premier titles in 2019 and 2020 against big-spending favourites TNS.

Morrison also guided the side to Welsh Cup and Welsh League Cup success. His most recent management role was in charge of the Sri Lanka national side for two years from 2022.

The ex-defender is in Blackpool's hall of fame and is a City ambassador having helped City to successive promotions in the late 1990s. He is regarded as one of the club's finest ever captains.

Anything else?

The incoming head coach's brother Alex, 32, is head of national goalkeeping for the Football Association of Wales (FAW) and coaches the nation's highly-rated youth goalkeepers.

Prior to that he was goalkeeper scouting manager at Premier League outfit Brighton.

Ramsay was a long-serving goalkeeper in the Welsh top flight with Caernarfon, Rhyl and Bala. It is unclear where Albion's plans are with regards to the goalkeeper coaching role - current incumbent Myhill stepped up from the academy after Carlos Corberan's exit - but Ramsay would not have to look far if he was considering options.
