He struck after knocking on the closed doors of the number 1 bus in Cannock, and being allowed on by the driver. The robber brandished a small knife and demanded money, fleeing with coins from the black plastic tray and a red canvas money bag.

He ran off across an open field towards Pye Green.

The Arriva bus had pulled up in Oak Avenue on the Dog-in-Tree estate shortly before 6.15pm on Tuesday.

No passengers were on the bus.

Following the robbery, police searched the area but were unable to trace the culprit.

The man was white, thin, aged in his 20s and was wearing a cream or beige coloured hooded top or coat, white jogging bottoms and a blue scarf. Peter Bate from Staffordshire Police said the driver was not injured in the attack but was left badly shaken.

Keith Myatt from Arriva Midlands said the company was liaising with police to try and find the robber.

He said police were studying CCTV footage taken from the bus at the time.

"It is a serious matter and our staff have the right to go about their business without threat of violence or intimidation," he said.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quoting incident number 543.
