'I keep my children away from Tettenhall Pool during peak times - there is too much disorder and soiled nappies are left behind'

A local resident said she keeps her children away from Wolverhampton’s free outdoor pool due to disorder and the amount of litter left.

A local resident said she keeps her children away from Tettenhall Pool, the free outdoor facility in Wolverhampton, due to incidents of disorder and the amount of litter that has been left behind.

Anna Simpson, who lives in Tettenhall, said the outdoor pool is a “great facility” but “unfortunately there is a significant minority of people coming in large numbers and just not looking after the area”.

She told the Express & Star that she visited the area on Monday evening (25 May) and was disgusted by the amount of litter left.

Hundreds had flocked to the free outdoor pool in Tettenhall on Monday to cool off as temperatures soared up to 33C.

Ms Simpson said: “I came Monday evening and there were multiple soiled nappies. People had ripped off their parking fines and just dumped them on the road.”

Councillor Sohail Khan, of Tettenhall Regis Ward, also blasted the amount of rubbish left behind at Tettenhall Pool, when he visited the area on Tuesday morning (26 May).

He said: “I visited Tettenhall Paddling Pool again this morning and, to say it was carnage, would be an understatement. The amount of rubbish left behind was completely unacceptable.

“Litter was scattered across the site and surrounding areas, creating an unpleasant environment for residents and visitors alike. If people continue to abuse the area, there will inevitably be calls for stricter enforcement, restrictions, or other measures that nobody wants to see introduced.”

Ms Simpson told the Express & Star that her children used to enjoy the facility when they were younger but now they are not allowed to use the outdoor pool during busier times due to disorder.

She said: “My own children came and enjoyed it when they were younger, but we don’t actually let them come up here in peak times as I think there is too much anti-social behaviour. There was disorder on Monday night.”

“We keep our children away from the area during peak times which is quite a shame”.

A man and a woman, in their 40s, were taken to hospital after they were assaulted near the pool and seen to by paramedics.

West Midlands Police said they were called just after 4.35pm and are appealing for anyone with information to contact them by calling 101 quoting log 3380 of 25 May.

On the issue of litter, City of Wolverhampton Councillor, Qaiser Azeem, said: “We estimate around 4,000 people flocked to Tettenhall Pool over the weekend to bask in the brilliant Bank Holiday weather.

“It is always great to see so many people enjoying this top city attraction that we provide free of charge, however we urge everyone to do so in a responsible and considerate way.

“We ask people to leave the area litter free after they’ve enjoyed it, and if the bins are full during times of such high footfall, to take their excess rubbish home with them.”
