Call for second outdoor swim site in Wolverhampton amid 'overwhelming popularity' of Tettenhall Pool

Hundreds flocked to the city’s only free outdoor swimming facility over the bank holiday weekend

A petition has been launched to encourage Wolverhampton Council to provide a second outdoor swimming pool.

Keeley Jane, who used to live in Wolverhampton and still works in the city, has started a petition to put pressure on the council to provide a second outdoor swimming pool.

Ms Jane said the recent bank holiday weekend and the huge turnout at Tettenhall Pool “certainly highlighted just how popular outdoor swimming is in Wolverhampton” and “reinforced my feeling that there is a strong demand for outdoor swimming opportunities across the city”.

Ms Jane said: “This excessive demand often leaves families and individuals without access to this vital community space which highlights the need for additional outdoor swimming amenities in the city.”

She is calling on the city council to “conduct a thorough feasibility study on the need for a second outdoor swimming facility”.

She added: “Such an investigation would provide insightful data about the current and projected demand for outdoor swimming venues, enabling the council to make informed decisions in the interest of community access and public health.

“By undertaking this study, the council can explore the possibility of creating an additional space that accommodates more swimmers, encourages public health through active lifestyles, and offers an inclusive environment for all members of the community.

“Especially as our city's population grows and the emphasis on maintaining healthy lifestyles strengthens, it's time to ensure everyone has equal access to outdoor recreational facilities.”

When the Express & Star put the petition to Wolverhampton council, Councillor Qaiser Azeem, cabinet member for resident services, noted the existing free-of-charge splash pad in East Park and WV Active swimming pools.

Councillor Azeem said in a statement: “We are delighted that thousands of people have enjoyed Tettenhall Pool over the bank holiday weekend and during the school half term. The record-breaking temperatures made it a great opportunity for families to make most of the free council facility.

“The council also provides the free-of-charge Splash Pad in East Park as well as WV Active swimming pools, providing a range of options for families for swimming and recreation spaces.

“We love the passion our residents have Tettenhall Pool and always welcome feedback and ideas from people who live, work and visit our city.”
