Saddle maker keeping heritage craft alive invests in top quality new equipment thanks to Walsall Business Support grant
A specialist saddle manufacturer is set to enhance its production capabilities after receiving a £7,000 grant from Walsall Business Support.
Ellendy Saddlery, which has its premises on Darlaston Central Trading Estate, will use the grant to invest in a high-quality sewing machine for precise stitching, as well as cutting tools for shaping leather and embossing machines to add intricate designs.
The funding will also go towards a skiving machine, durable workbenches, specialised hand tools and upgraded materials to produce premium saddles.
Building on Walsall’s heritage as the heart of the British saddle making industry, Ellendy Saddlery was established in February 2024 by brothers Leigh and David Rathbone, who decided to start their own business after working in the industry for a combined 50 years.
The new equipment will replace older, unreliable machinery, allowing the business to improve the quality and efficiency of its saddle production.
David Rathbone said: “This grant will make a real difference to our business. Our current machinery is old and unreliable, so with the new sewing machines and swing press, we will be able to produce better quality saddles in a shorter timeframe.
"We are grateful to Walsall Business Support for helping us grow our operation.”
Led by leading business figures to distribute funds collected from the legacy of Walsall Chamber of Commerce, Walsall Business Support funds projects to enhance the borough’s economy.

Ellendy Saddlery currently sells direct to saddle distributors but has plans to expand its offering to sell directly to the public in the future.
The new equipment will be installed soon, supporting the company’s ambitions to grow its brand and reach new markets.
