New fishmonger makes a splash at Brierley Hill Market bringing dayboat British fish to shoppers
A 20-year-old fishmonger is making waves at Brierley Hill Market where he's launched a new stall – bringing top-quality, dayboat-fresh British fish back to the market.
Matt Witts, from Gloucester, has launched the new MW Seafoods stall - having always dreamed of having one of his own.
Fishmongering runs deep in Matt’s family, with more than 70 years in the business, and he learned the ropes working on his dad’s stall.
He said: “Growing up, I always enjoyed working with my dad on his fish stall and always wanted a stall of my own to continue that passion.
“Brierley Hill Market is a great market with all the stalls for the weekly shop, so when we knew they were after a new fishmonger, it was as if it was meant to be."
The return of a fishmonger has brought a fresh wave of excitement to the market and has been warmly welcomed by the local community.
Councillor Adam Davies, who represents Brierley Hill and Wordsley South, said: “It’s great to welcome Matt to his new stall at the market, marking the much-called-for return of a fishmonger to the town.
“It’s brilliant to hear how Matt is following in his dad’s footsteps too, and how he has a passion for making fresh dayboat fish available to local people around Brierley Hill and surrounding areas.
”All fish sold at MW Seafoods is proudly caught in British waters, ensuring the highest quality and freshness.
"The stall specialises in dayboat fish, meaning it’s caught and landed within a single day for ultimate freshness."
Fellow ward councillor Wayne Little added: “It’s fantastic to see young entrepreneurs like Matt bringing traditional skills back to our high streets. Having a fishmonger at Brierley Hill Market again adds real value for shoppers and supports the market’s role at the heart of the community. We wish Matt every success.”
Shane Birch-Bastock, director at Brierley Hill Community Forum, also welcomed the launch of the new stall - adding: “It’s brilliant to see a family tradition being continued by the next generation, and even better that it’s happening right here in Brierley Hill. Fresh, local fish is something people have really missed, so it’s great to see it return.
”Whether you’re after cod, haddock, or something more adventurous, Matt is ready to serve the freshest British seafood to the people of Brierley Hill."
MW Seafoods is open on regular market days: Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 8am to 4pm.
